On Thursday, August 18th, with a 9-0 vote, the TVA Board of Directors authorized the completion of one nuclear unit at the Bellefonte site in Jackson County, Alabama.
“As we build Bellefonte we will integrate safety modifications from the extensive review of the lessons learned from the Fukushima nuclear plants in Japan,” said TVA President & CEO Tom Kilgore. “Making Bellefonte a productive asset with state-of-the-art equipment will add an additional supply of clean, base-load power to TVA’s generating mix.”
When completed, the nuclear unit at Bellefonte will generate 1,260 megawatts, or enough to power about 750,000 homes in the Valley.
“The addition of reliable and affordable generation capacity to TVA’s portfolio is a victory for families and businesses in the Valley,” said Lance Brown, PACE Executive Director. “It is also a statement that nuclear power should remain a part of future solutions for powering our nation’s progress.”
