Summer Heat = Increased Need for Energy Assistance

During hot summer months when many households rely on air conditioning to stay cool, energy suppliers across the Southeast are prepared to help low-income customers in need of assistance coping with energy bills. This summer, it’s been really hot across America. As part of the National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition’s August LIHEAP action month campaign, we’re spotlighting the Southeast region’s growing need for the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

LIHEAP is a federally-funded block grant program, heralding from the early days of the Reagan Administration. Grants are made to states, tribes and territories to

Hedging Happens Every Day

Following up from our column last week in Morning Consult, we wanted to create a simple way to explain natural gas hedging. As our infographic shows, gas hedging is no different than common, everyday steps families and individuals take to protect themselves from risk, whether that’s having a home insurance policy or bringing an umbrella with you in case of rain. Simply put, natural gas hedging helps utilities plan against risk and provide a stable and affordable supply of energy for consumers.

Please feel free to share our infographic on your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram account, or forward to your

Natural Gas Hedging - Smart Tool for Diverse Energy Portfolio

PACE thanks Morning Consult for publishing this op-ed as original content. https://morningconsult.com/opinions/hedging-smart-tool-diverse-energy-portfolio/.

As the U.S. energy portfolio continues to diversify, the tools and tactics electric utilities use to protect consumers and stabilize costs must keep up with the times to accommodate the growth of natural gas, renewable resources, storage and other innovations.

One of the most critical tools is hedging, a fact frequently discussed and underscored by state lawmakers. As an example, Missouri recently passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 43 that reaffirms the state’s policy of allowing electric utilities to hedge natural gas contracts and supports

DOE's Hard Work and Always-On, Clean, Affordable Power

While media attention focuses on events at one end of Pennsylvania Avenue, federal agencies and dedicated employees all over the country are quietly making progress on energy issues. This week, PACE takes a look at just one week’s output of good news from the Department of Energy. Sec. Rick Perry believes in all of the above, while championing renewable energy, and his philosophy shines through in work done each day by DOE divisions and partners.

On May 15, DOE announced a sizable grant of $72 million to “advance high-temperature concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies,” continuing U.S. leadership in the space.

Wolverines Set Shining Solar Example

Last summer, PACE released a report reviewing state solar net metering policies and discussing ideologies that influence some states to over-compensate private solar generators at the expense of every other consumer on the grid. We’ve enjoyed presenting on this topic and appreciate the many positive comments about our report’s readability and usefulness. Combine the strong response to PACE’s report with the uptick in state legislative and regulatory attention to net metering in 2018, and the result is that PACE will update our report later this year.

However, a few recent state developments merit attention before the fall.

Community Solar for All

PACE supports “all of the above” energy policies, even though the phrase itself has fallen out of fashion in some circles. All of the above, in case we haven’t always been clear, includes renewable energy.

One of the most important renewable sources is community solar. The price is right, compared to many other forms of renewable energy. And there’s something intangible too, that may not appear on a spreadsheet. Somehow, people respond to seeing panels in a small, approachable array while on their way to the grocery store or the local school.

Owing to our interest in community solar, we

PACE Natural Gas Hedging Panel on Facebook Live Today

At the start of October, PACE debuted a short video drawing attention to the importance of natural gas hedging as a tool for keeping power prices stable and affordable. We also highlighted how natural gas increasingly plays a pivotal role in national security.

Our two experts, Andy Whitesitt of ACES, and Dr. Leo Goff, will appear with me in Washington, D.C. this evening for a short, informative panel session to expand on these topics.

You can watch our discussion on Facebook Live beginning today, Thursday October 26th at 5:30 p.m. EST. Just go to https://www.facebook.com/EnergyFairness/

Natural Gas Pipelines - Mountains of Rhetoric and Facts

Traveling around this Southeast this summer, I saw quite a few yard signs registering opinions about drilling and pipelines. Last month, PACE filed comments supporting an expanded federal offshore oil and natural gas leasing program.

Onshore energy projects, such as the Atlantic Coast (ACP) and Mountain Valley (MVP) pipelines also bring value to consumers. Both have been extensively studied and are now working through exhaustive reviews and approvals. Unsurprisingly, the projects are also targets for well-funded opposition campaigns from environmental groups.

The ACP would run about 600 miles starting in West Virginia, extending into Virginia
